Hardin is an anthropologist who has worked in equatorial, southern and eastern Africa, as well as in the US and Europe on human/wildlife relationships, technological change and changes in teaching and learning about the environment. She leads the Environmental Justice field of Specialization and Certificate Program at UMSEAS, where she founded and directs the open source, open access sustainability science learning platform, www.learngala.com.
